Na hranicích Mississippi vítají návštěvníky cedule s hrdým nápisem „Birthplace of America’s Music“ – Kolébka americké hudby. A není to přehnané. Z tohoto státu pocházel Elvis Presley, „otec country music“ Jimmie Rodgers a především zde vyrostly některé z nejzásadnějších podob blues, které následně ovlivnilo celou moderní populární hudbu.
Do samotného srdce Mississippi nás zavede Greg Johnson, vedoucí proslulého Blues Archive při University of Mississippi. V multimediálním pořadu představí dva odlišné hudební světy, které sehrály zásadní roli ve vývoji a šíření blues: Mississippi Deltu a North Mississippi Hill Country.
Jak může z jednoho relativně malého území vyrůst tolik mimořádné hudby? V čem se liší zvuk, rytmus a tradice Delty a Hill Country? Jak se lokální hudba černošských komunit dostala z Mississippi do celého světa – a jak ovlivnila rock’n’roll i další žánry?
Greg Johnson nebude jen vyprávět. Přiveze fotografie, příběhy a především nově digitalizované historické nahrávky z archivních fondů University of Mississippi, které dají posluchačům možnost slyšet tuto hudební historii přímo z jejího pramene.

Greg Johnson je vedoucím Special Collections, kurátorem bluesových fondů a profesorem na University of Mississippi. Je spoluautorem oceňované knihy 100 Books Every Blues Fan Should Own a působil jako editor Encyclopedia of the Blues. Vedle akademické a archivní práce je také aktivním hudebníkem.

From the Delta to the Hill Country – how one state shaped modern music
At the Mississippi state line, visitors are greeted by signs proudly proclaiming “Welcome to Mississippi – Birthplace of America’s Music.” It is not much of an exaggeration. Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, came from Tupelo; Jimmie Rodgers, the Father of Country Music, from Meridian – and, most importantly, some of the most influential forms of blues grew out of this state before spreading across the world and shaping modern popular music.
Greg Johnson, Head of the renowned Blues Archive at the University of Mississippi, will take us straight to the musical heart of the state. In this multimedia presentation, he will explore two distinct regions that played a crucial role in the development and worldwide spread of the blues: the Mississippi Delta and the North Mississippi Hill Country.
How did one relatively small part of America produce such an extraordinary amount of influential music? What distinguishes the sound, rhythm and traditions of Delta blues from Hill Country blues? How did music rooted in local Black communities travel from Mississippi to the rest of the world – and go on to influence rock’n’roll, country and countless other genres?
Greg Johnson will not just tell the story. The presentation will feature photographs, stories and, most importantly, recently digitized historical recordings from the vaults of the University of Mississippi Blues Archive, offering a rare opportunity to hear this musical history directly from its source.
Greg Johnson
Greg Johnson is Head of Special Collections, Blues Curator, and Professor at the University of Mississippi. He is the co-author of 100 Books Every Blues Fan Should Own, which received awards from both the Association for Recorded Sound Collections and the Music Library Association, and he served as consulting editor for the Encyclopedia of the Blues. Alongside his academic and archival work, he is also an active musician.
