The Rick Derringer Band /USA/
As Ricky Dean Zehringer, which is Derringer's birth name, a true legend of the American blues-rookie as well as other genres, is coming to us. From the point of view of the BLUES ALIVE festival, his most famous creative period is at the turn of the 60s and 70s, when after several years of experience with The McCoys, which he had set up as a teenager, and with their hit Hang On Sloopy reached the very top of the American charts in 1965 (for your information: this hit was replaced by The Beatles’ Yesterday after a week). He began to work with brothers Johnny and Edgar Winters. With the first one he started the band Johnny Winter And and with the second one Edgar Winter's White Trash, playing the guitar in both, composing and co-producing their recordings. It was the first album by Johnny Winter And where the biggest hit by Derringer and one of the most famous blues-rock songs ever Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo, which was recorded several times by the author and which is an indispensable part of all his performances, appeared.

Derringer produced the comeback album for Johnny Winter, who had returned to the scene after his drug escapades with the album Still Alive And Well in 1973. Then he developed his own solo career, which began in the same year with his debut All-American Boy and he also worked as a guitarist, composer or producer with a number of different artists of all genres, from Meat Loaf, Kiss and Alice Cooper, through Bonnie Tyler and Steely Dan after Barbra Streisand. The 70s and the 80s were the successful decades for him, even though he had significantly departed from his original genre. The rich harvest culminated with the award of Grammy for the production of Weird by the American satirical songwriter Ala Yankovic.

Since the nineties Derringer has been returning to his original style, and we may find it hard to look for another musician who has come up more frequently with the word "blues" in the names of their albums: Back to the Blues (1993), Electra Blues (1994), Blues Deluxe (1998), Jackhammer Blues (2000) or Knighted by the Blues (2009). Occasionally he played again with Edgar Winter, and in 2011 he was a member of Ringo Star and His All-Starr Band, whom he played with at the concert in the Prague Congress Centre. His flagship song Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo was even heard on that stage. And it is certain that it will not be left out at BLUES ALIVE.
